Course Overview

This nationally recognised unit provides the skills and knowledge required to operate a non-slewing mobile crane with a capacity greater than 3 tonnes. This includes articulated "Franna" style cranes and other mobile cranes that do not have a slewing superstructure. Our 4-to-5-day intensive course is designed to take you from the classroom to the cab, focusing on load charts, articulated steering, and safe travel protocols.

Enrolment Requirements

Be at least 18 years of age.

Hold a current National High Risk Work Licence for Dogging (DG). (Mandatory prerequisite).

Provide 100 points of Identification (e.g., Passport, Driver’s Licence, Medicare Card).

Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Possess a high level of numeracy for load chart calculations and distance assessments.

Wear Steel-cap boots, long pants, and high-vis clothing.

What you will Learn

Mobile Stability: Understanding how articulated steering affects the crane’s stability and capacity during a turn

Load Chart Mastery: Calculating crane capacity for various boom lengths and articulating angles

Safe Travel Protocols: Manoeuvring with a suspended load, including "walking" a load across uneven ground

Hazard Management: Identifying overhead powerlines, ground services, and pedestrian exclusion zones

Pre-Start & Post-Start Checks: Conducting comprehensive inspections of the boom, hydraulics, and articulating joints

Communication: Coordinating with a Dogman using radio and hand signals to ensure a safe path of travel

Outcome: Upon successful completion, you will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment and the paperwork required to apply for your High Risk Work Licence (Class CN) with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ)
